In ‘General’ They Want This Win!
It would be safe to say that this weekend is one of the most sentimental meetings of the year, with every driver wanting to walk away with the win.
This weekend’s event at the Perth Motorplex pays tribute to ‘The General’ John Day, and with many of the competitors growing up in Speedway with his flashy team of orange utes making their way around the track, led by the man himself, they certainly want this trophy in their cabinet.
Aside from paying tribute to a legend, this weekend’s show is also Round Six of the Pro Dirt Series proudly presented by the team at SupaFit Seat Covers, and with a couple of country-based shows in the last week, the points standings have changed up a bit.
With a second and a fourth at the Kalgoorlie and Esperance rounds respectively, Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) still leads the Pro Dirt points chase, some fifty-four points clear of second place. Jamie also leads the XLI Perth Motorplex Track Championship by twenty points, a win and a fourth so far enough to see him topping the tables, a stat he will be keen to maintain this weekend.
The man doing all the chasing is Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:), moving up the Pro Dirt points standings into second place and going for his fourth feature win on the trot. Should Chalmers achieve the feat he will join illustrious company including Kye Blight (2020), Steve Francis (2017 and 2012), Warren Oldfield (2014), Jamie Oldfield (2012), Brad Blake (2009, 2006, 2004, 2003, and 2002) as drivers with four (or more) wins on the trot, and after breaking through for the elusive Motorplex feature win earlier this season, he is certainly going to give it a red hot crack.
Consistency pays and Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing) is reaping the rewards right now, third in the Pro Dirt standings and second in the Motorplex Track Championships. Two fourths, a sixth, an eighth and a ninth in the five features so far have seen him having his best start to a season in many years and with his star on the up and up, we may just see him holding that first place trophy aloft!
Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) won the opening event of the season at Ellenbrook Speedway, but some tough results in a couple of rounds dropped him down the order slightly. After a big result at the last show, Warren is keen to get back into his winning ways, and with this trophy one of the few missing from his cabinet, Warren will be racing hard to make some magic happen on Saturday night.
‘Fast’ Freddy Kinsella (Team Green Racing) sits fifth overall after running as high as second prior to the Kalgoorlie/Esperance swing. Freddy was second at the Motorplex at Powerpalooza, and with a bit of luck he could be right back in the mix this weekend.
Tasmanian visitor Brad Smith (Brad Smith Devil Motorsports 6T) has been enjoying him time in the West, sitting sixth overall, with Jason Oldfield (Oldfield Racing), Rod Musarra (Team Rocket), David Boyes (Boyes Motorsport) and Peter Walker (Team Eighty1 Racing) rounding out the Pro Dirt top ten. With all five drivers nominated this weekend, they too will be hoping to claw their way up the standings.
Two-time John Day Classic winner Matt Goodlad (Daytona Racing) is back in the field this weekend, making his first appearance for the season. Despite not racing as much as he would have liked in recent years, he has been fast every time he hits the track and that could convert into a solid result come feature race time.
Although not in the points race this season, Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing - TVR) will be keen to claim the win on Saturday night, his goal to go back-to-back after claiming this event twelve months ago. He has an impressive twenty-one wins at the Motorplex venue already so would love to add another, while others including Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components), David Nylander (Nylander Motorsport) and Brad Blake are just some of the names rejoining the field this weekend.
Another huge meeting, but this one will be special as we honour ‘The General’ so make sure you join us!
