A Huge Double Header!
The Kalgoorlie/Esperance double header weekend is one many drivers look forward to and this year is no different, with a good number of nominations received for this Friday and Saturday night’s shows.
Kalgoorlie International Speedway has attracted 21 nominations for Round Four while the following night at Tyres & More Esperance Speedway numbers jump to 26 for Round Five, the biggest so far in season 2024/25, and with both shows proudly presented by the team at Ross's Auctioneers & Valuers.
Friday night will mark the tenth time that the Pro Dirt Series has held a round at the venue, and the first time since November 2022 when Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) claimed the victory. Oldfield actually has a solid history up in Kalgoorlie, not just winning a State Title at the venue, but having claimed four of the nine Pro Dirt events held there so far, a stat he will be keen to improve to a 50% success rate this weekend.
That being said, Kalgoorlie also has a history of seeing first time winners: both Kye Blight and Lee Watt claiming their first every Pro Dirt feature race wins at the venue.
Esperance is back on the Pro Dirt calendar for the sixth time in history, and this time it is Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) looking to make a 50% win race as he comes in with two Pro Dirt victories at the venue to his name, including the event this time last year. The season prior it was Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) who took the victory, and with both in the field this weekend, they would love to add another victory come feature race time on Saturday night.
Of course the fields are bolstered by plenty of big names who are making the trek down from Perth to compete.
Jason Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) was third at the Esperance event last year and the year before, as well as third in the last Kalgoorlie Pro Dirt show, so certainly knows what it takes to run towards the front at both venues. Although he is only running a limited schedule this season, Jason was definitely not going to miss these two shows and will be going down with every intention of taking the win.
Fellow Pro Dirt regulars including Rod Musarra (Team Rocket), Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing), Abbey Pickering (All About Racing), Ryan Huxtable (Huxy Racing) and Freddy Kinsella (Team Green Racing) will also make the trip, while the local drivers make up the bulk of the field, a relief for a number of them after travelling so far to most of the other rounds!
Regular Pro Dirt drivers from Esperance including Greg Horan (CPR - Chopper Pop Racing) and Kalgoorlie’s Damian Hudson (Hudson Racing Team) and David Boyes (Boyes Motorsport), as well as former Kalgoorlie local Peter Walker (Team Eighty1 Racing) are all excited about the series’ heading to their hometowns, with fellow Kalgoorlie/Esperance regular racers Shaun Cubbage, Jeff Pahl (Pahly Racing), Mat Robbins (Robbins Motorsport ), Nathan Richards and Ben Strautins (BAS Racing) also nominating to have a crack and test themselves against the top Pro Dirt field!
There is a distinct interstate flavour to this weekend also, with Tasmanian Brad Smith (Brad Smith Devil Motorsports 6T), who has based his car here in WA, joining the local contingent and heading down, while we also welcome Victorian Brendan Hucker (Hucker Racing), who has sent his equipment over and will begin his WA swing this weekend with the double header before continuing onto Perth and racing in WA for much of the season. This weekend will tick new tracks off the list for both drivers, so it will be interesting to see how quickly they adapt to the venues!
We also welcome back into the fray former National and State Champion Kodee Brown (McCorry Brown Racing Team), racing his first Pro Dirt Series show since January earlier this year. Brown recently took the car for some test laps at the Perth Motorplex in preparation for this weekend and showed he had lost nothing, so one would be foolish to discount the bright orange #07!
Esperance will see five extra local nominations joining the field, including Club President Sean Barrett (Beaumont Motorsports), rookies Chevy Johnson and Matt Wrenn, and fellow locals Aaron Liddell and Murray Parsons Jr.
This weekend is going to be well worth the road trip, so make sure you head down and support the Late Model Pro Dirt Series!
