Late Model Racing Western Australia

It’s Nationals Time!

As if the last week of racing action hasn’t been big enough, this weekend will bring even more excitement as the ninth annual Late Model Nationals roars into action! With a massive field of forty nominations, fans are in for an unforgettable show as Australia’s best Late Model racers battle it out for supremacy.

Last year, Rod Musarra (@teamrocket) shocked the Late Model world by taking out the prestigious Nationals Title, and now he’s back to defend his crown. Musarra is one of three former winners in the field, and he’ll be looking to make history by becoming just the second driver to claim back-to-back titles.

The only driver to have ever gone back-to-back at the Nationals is none other than newly crowned Australian Champion Kye Blight (Kye Blight Racing). Blight has already won the event three times and is fresh off a dominant victory in the Michael Holmes Racing Hump Day Hustle. With that kind of momentum, the question remains—can he possibly be beaten?

Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing - TVR) is the third former winner in \the field, having claimed his Nationals victory three years ago. Word is, he’s still finding pieces of confetti in his car! Vosbergen has been in fine form this season, including an impressive front-row qualification for the National Title, and he’ll be looking to reclaim the top spot once again.

With a field stacked with talent, including multiple national and state champions, this year’s Late Model Nationals is set to be one of the most competitive yet. Former Australian Champion Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) has been loitering around the program for the last few shows and it wont take long for him to break through, while American import Myles Moos has really been showing us what he is capable of with a string of podiums and is desperate to claim that elusive win. If Moos is able to win he will become the fourth American visitor to claim the race and the first in six seasons.

Of course, at the last show, Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) had Moos’ number, claiming his tenth podium finish for the season. He has been right on the pace in recent weeks, punctuated by his win in the WA Title and he would love to add a Nationals Crown to his trophy collection as it is one of the few he does not yet have.

There are plenty of others who can be expected to run towards the front across the weekend: names like Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) (nine podium finishes including three wins so far this season), Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing) (an impressive five heat race wins to his name so far in 2024/25), Jason Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) (a solid feature win not too long ago his best result for the year) and former National Champions Kodee Brown (McCorry Brown Racing Team) and Brad Blake who have been coming back into form and put on some incredibly competitive shows.

As if that wasn’t enough, we have the bulk of our visiting drivers remaining on the West Coast for one more show: Ben Nicastri, Jordan Cunningham, Lachlan Onley, Todd Bayley, Bruce Mackenzie, Brad Smith and Jacob Croker, plus American Joe Godsey all in the field.

Numbers have been buoyed by the late addition of another Late Model stalwart, Darryl Grimson being given the call up to pilot the Nylander Motorsport #54 after regular driver David Nylander remains on the sidelines with illness.

Add in plenty of other local hopes including Veronica McCann, Craig Vosbergen, and Jay Cardy and there is still plenty to fight for this weekend! If the last few shows are anything to go by, we are certainly in for a treat!
Starting this Friday night at the Perth Motorplex with qualifying, two rounds of heats and then two preliminary features, Saturday night will feature one more round of heats, a last chance qualifier and then the feature event in a format very similar to the Australian Championship.

Racing begins tomorrow night from 5.30pm.
