Vosbergen Wins the JD Classic!
Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing - TVR) has continued to build on his season form by powering to victory in the John Day Classic tonight at the Perth Motorplex, securing his second win in the prestigious event with a commanding performance in a drama-filled 30-lap feature.
The opening lap set the tone immediately as Vosbergen and Ken Macpherson (KMM - Ken Macpherson Motorsport) hit the line together, with Brad Blake and Rod Musarra (Team Rocket) right behind them. Vosbergen took control early, with Macpherson in hot pursuit and Blake sliding past Musarra for third.
However, before a lap could be completed, Nathan Richards and David Boyes (Boyes Motorsport) tangled, triggering the first yellow.
Attempt two played out much the same, with Vosbergen again leading away, but this time with Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing) surging into second as Blake slowed out of turn two, forcing the field to scatter before he was able to exit the track.
Vosbergen wasted no time re-establishing his dominance, opening a near two-second lead before Mat Robbins (Robbins Motorsport ) spun in turn one to bring out another caution.
The restart saw Vosbergen charge away once more, with Halliday holding second ahead of Macpherson, while Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) slipped past Musarra into fourth.
Within just a few laps, Vosbergen was again more than two seconds clear as Macpherson and Halliday waged a fierce battle: Macpherson on the high line, Halliday hugging the bottom, and Chalmers lurking directly behind.
Halliday eventually shook free, but a lapped car hampered Macpherson’s momentum, allowing first Chalmers and then Beau Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) to slip by. Disaster struck moments later when Macpherson’s engine released a puff of smoke, forcing him infield just before a yellow was thrown for Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components), who suffered a flat tyre.
On the restart, the running order changed quickly as Chalmers and Oldfield both moved past Halliday, while Michael Holmes (Michael Holmes Racing) also slipped through for fourth. One lap later, Veronica McCann (Veronica McCann - Red Hot Racing) stormed into the top five with an impressive move.
With seven laps to go, Oldfield made a bold dive on Chalmers entering turn three but the car slid out from underneath him, sending him backwards into the wall and bringing out another caution.
Holmes attempted a big outside move on Chalmers for second on the restart, but couldn’t make it stick and soon found himself under fire from McCann, who continued her late-race charge.
Despite all the moves behind him though, no one had an answer for Vosbergen. As he had done all night, Vosbergen blasted away on the restart and controlled the final laps to take his second John Day Classic Late Model victory. Chalmers claimed a strong second, with Holmes third, McCann fourth and Halliday rounding out the top five.
The Late Models now have a short break for Christmas before returning to action on Boxing Day at the Perth Motorplex!
