Chalmers Makes it Four!
Last night at the Albany Speedway Club, Australian Champion Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) showed he means business as the big month of money approaches, claiming his fourth feature race of the season in what was the ninth round of the Pro Dirt Series proudly presented by Albany World of Cars.
Twenty-one cars would front for the night’s action and after the heat races (won by Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) (twice), Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) and Chalmers), twenty would greet the starter for the main event.
Warren Oldfield ran low and Chalmers high as the race went green, the duo side by side for the opening three turns before Chalmers got the nose out in front to lead lap one.
Behind them Jamie Oldfield was running third, before Brad Smith (Brad Smith Devil Motorsports 6T) was able to get by him.
The first caution of the race came out shortly after as Mat Robbins (Robbins Motorsport ) came to a stop at the top of turn four, bunching the field up once again.
Chalmers was quickly away while Warren was able to get away cleanly on Smith to maintain second, as further back Jamie came under pressure from Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing) who would eventually get by.
Halliday had a moment a few laps later and although it didn’t see him lose a position, Jamie had to hit the brakes behind him which was enough for David Nylander (Nylander Motorsport) to dive underneath Jamie to take over the fifth-place running.
Back up front Chalmers and Warren were running nose to tail, making their way through lapped traffic as the laps wound down. Smith would also close the gap and lock onto the back of Warren, but at this stage was unable to make any moves.
The yellows were out once again shortly after with a number of cars including Robbins, Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components) and Damian Hudson (Hudson Racing Team), all coming to a stop at the bottom of turn four.
On the restart Chalmers would lead away Warren, Smith, Halliday and Nylander, but again the race would be called back under cautions as a whole pile of cars came together and stopped in turn four without a lap being completed.
The next attempt was much better, with Nylander able to firstly get by Halliday and then use the high line to move around Smith, taking third place. Mid pack there was plenty of changes for positions, but up front Chalmers was holding strong and no matter what Warren tried, he couldn’t get by Joe.
As the laps wound down the lead duo pulled further and further away, though when lapped traffic came back into play Nylander was able to peg the gap back, the lead cars all battling in a small portion of the track.
At one point Warren went high coming out of two and that gave Nylander the chance he needed to duck underneath and draw level with Warren, but Warren was able to regain his composure and maintain the position.
Coming to the chequer though Nylander had a moment and half lose which gave Freddy Kinsella (Team Green Racing) an opportunity which he took, racing around to grab third on the line and round out the podium finishers behind winner Chalmers and second placed Warren Oldfield in what was an exciting finish to a great night of racing.
Teams now have just a week before they return to racing action once again, the tenth round of the Pro Dirt Series to be held at the Perth Motorplex next weekend, proudly presented by Scardifield Smash Repairs.
