Oldfield Wins a Marathon!

It was a marathon feature race tonight at the Perth Motorplex, but when all was said and done, it was Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) who did enough to claim his second feature race win for the season in what was Round Eight of the Pro Dirt Series, proudly presented by the team at Scardifield Smash Repairs!

Jamie certainly didn’t have it all his own way though, qualifying from position eight in the main event and not hitting the front until the dying stages in a feature that had its fair share of highs and lows.

Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:), Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing), Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing - TVR) and Rod Musarra (Team Rocket) would share the heat race wins, with Vosbergen and Warren Oldfield doing enough to start the main event from the front row.

Warren shot like a bullet from a gun on the start of the thirty-lap feature, Vosbergen slotting into second while Musarra was able to get the edge on Chalmers for third.

Behind them Jason Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) and Jamie were going two wide for fifth.

Unfortunately the yellows came on with two laps complete as Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components) found himself facing the wrong way in turn four.

The restart was chaos, with Brad Smith (Brad Smith Devil Motorsports 6T), Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing), Peter Walker (Team Eighty1 Racing) and Damian Hudson (Hudson Racing Team) all coming to a stop in a pile in turn two, only Smith unable to rejoin.

Warren would scoot away quickly on the restart, Vosbergen in second while Musarra was now under attack from Jamie Oldfield, Jamie grabbing the third position on lap four.

The laps began to wind down and with eight complete Warren was well into lapped traffic and had built up a big gap on Vosbergen, who was now fighting hard to hold off Jamie.

The yellows came out shortly after, with Hudson spinning to a stop in turn two and he would not rejoin the race.

Unfortunately the next restart was even worse than the previous one, not even making the line with Greg Horan (CPR - Chopper Pop Racing), Peter Seaton (Peter Seaton Racing), Peter Walker, Shaun Cubbage and Chris Barrow (Barrow Motorsports) all stranded and stuck together in turn four. After some clever extrication work by the Motorplex officials all were able to restart and Warren again led the field away.

Jamie moved high on the restart and was able to drive around the outside of Vosbergen for second, but Vosbergen didn’t give up and fought back, retaking second on lap ten.

Again Jamie held strong and on lap eleven retook second, Vosbergen now third while further back Musarra was holding off Joe Chalmers, Brad Blake and David Nylander (Nylander Motorsport) in another tight battle.
Jason Oldfield became the third retiree of the race on lap thirteen, while on track all cars were hugging the kerb as they rotated around, no one able to gain any ground.

Warren was forced off the bottom as he moved through lapped traffic and this allowed Jamie to close in, by lap twenty not much space between the brothers at all after they cleared a pack of four cars.

Oldfield of the Warren variety continued to hold strong over Jamie, with Vosbergen now well back, stuck behind five lapped cars, while the Musarra, Chalmers, Blake battle was a further third of a lap behind.

With five to go, Warren was lapping tenth placed Cardy, Jamie still right on his tail, and with both forced off the low line, there was 0.095 seconds separating them on lap twenty-seven.

Lapped traffic continued to play its part and just as Jamie put the claw to the floor on the highline the yellow lights came out for a spinning Shaun Cubbage, setting up a three lap restart.

Once again, the race resumption attempt didn’t get off the ground, this time as Michael Holmes (Michael Holmes Racing) lost a wheel and spun, David Nylander, Luke Halliday and Brad Blake all piling in together in turn four.

Warren stayed low and Jamie shot round the outside to take the lead coming out of turn two on the next restart, but the yellows came out once again, this time for Peter Walker and Peter Seaton after Walker spun and Seaton ended up parked on top of him in turn one.

Somehow both were able to rejoin and the field had one more go at completing the race.

Warren shot away and this time Jamie couldn’t quite keep up, while Vosbergen also got a sniff on the inside.

Warren went high in turn two with two to go and Jamie dove through on the inside, Warren slowing and Jamie going on to win a torrid affair as Warren was swallowed up by the chasing field, Vosbergen holding on for second and Joe Chalmers salvaging a third place finish.

Teams now have a short time off racing to celebrate the upcoming New Year before heading down the highway to the picturesque Albany Speedway Club for the next round of the Pro Dirt Series on Saturday the 4th of January.
