Late Model Racing Western Australia
The Biggest Title Ever!
It has been touted as the biggest Title ever and going by competitor numbers, this weekend’s Mobil 1 Australian Late Model Championship will certainly not disappoint!
Fifty-two competitors have nominated from all across the country as they fight for the right to wear Australia #1, with a field that includes two Queenslanders, two Tasmanians, three Americans, four Victorians, five New South Welshmen, and thirty-six West Aussies.
So far this season across Australia there have been forty-six Late Model feature races held. These wins have been shared by twenty-one drivers and this weekend, we have twelve of them here, a total of thirty wins between them.
Also in the field are no less than seven former Australian Champions who share twelve of the twenty-one Australian Title wins ever held.
Heading the list is defending Champion Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:), who raced his way to victory in this event at Toowoomba last year. He has five feature wins to his name so far this season and with plenty of raw speed in recent weeks, certainly comes into the event as one of the hot favourites, looking to become the first since American Steve Francis in 2012/13 to go back to back.
Five time champion Brad Blake can never be counted out, and with three of those championships coming at the Motorplex, plus coming in as the winningest Late Model driver not just at the Motorplex, but in Australia, he is determined to win another crown.
Kodee Brown (McCorry Brown Racing Team) and Kye Blight (Kye Blight Racing) each won their respective Titles at the Motorplex, and with both having returned to the hot seat recently, are more than ready to gun for a second win, while Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing - TVR) is in a similar boat, having won his Title at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway and now keen to grab one at his home track.
As if this wasn’t enough, the youngest ever Late Model Australian Champion Callum Harper (Harper Racing Team) is also making his way West from Tasmania, making his Motorplex debut. He has two wins to his name in season 2024/25 and would love to make it a third on debut at the Plex, while in late news, two-time champion Darren Kane has also jumped aboard the Nylander Motorsport #54 for the weekend and is looking for his third crown. Should Kane win, it would be his third different state, his previous victories coming in Queensland and South Australia, and after a second place behind Chalmers last season in this event, he cannot be discounted.
Of course, there are plenty of drivers in the field that have come close agonisingly close to National Title without a victory: names like Craig Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing - TVR), Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing), Cameron Pearson, Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components), Ben Nicastri (@BenNicastriRacing), Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) and Jac Dolmans Jnr all having grabbed podium finishes previously.
Jamie Oldfield is in great form, having recently won the WA Title at the Motorplex venue, giving him a total of three feature wins this season. Brother Warren Oldfield has also had three wins in 2024/25 and was on the podium at the last show so is full of confidence, while Ben Nicastri also has three feature wins this season, including one at Warrnambool just a couple of weeks ago.
Ben Strautins (BAS Racing) has five feature wins to his name this season, having dominated the Kalgoorlie/Esperance scene, while Mat Robbins (@RobbinsMotorsport) has three in the same company. Jason Oldfield comes into this weekend as the last start winner after victory at Ellenbrook, his second feature race win for the season, while Victorian Dylan Barrow, Freddy Kinsella, Beau Oldfield and New South Welshman Lachlan Onley have also had feature successes in 2024/25.
As if this wasn’t enough, Michael Holmes Racing has imported American Myles Moos especially for this event, and he will be joined by fellow countrymen Joe Godsey and Jeff Roth (both who have contested Australian Title events previously), all desperate to become just the second American to win this event (behind two-time champion Steve Francis).
The quality goes right through the field: picking a winner is near on impossible with names like Brad Smith, Matt Goodlad, Peter Nicola, Luke Halliday, Todd Bayley and Veronica McCann also forming part of the field amongst many, many other quality drivers.
It has been a long five year wait, but this weekend, the Mobil 1 Australian Late Model Championship finally returns to its spiritual home at the Perth Motorplex, so make sure you don’t miss a minute of the action!
Racing is this Friday and Saturday nights, with live coverage available: check the Perth Motorplex Facebook Page for full details.
