Mackenzie Wins at Windy Hill!
The 2025 Michael Holmes Racing Winter Series finally got underway yesterday at the Kellerberrin Speedway Club and it was New South Wales driver Bruce Mackenzie who made the long trip worth it as he claimed the opening feature race!
Mackenzie was strong throughout the day, winning the rescheduled opening heat race (which was actually held after the second heat race due to some on track issues that saw the field sent back to the pits to regroup!) and setting himself up for a pole position start in the fifteen lap main event.
He would then race into the lead with heat two winner Abbey Pickering (All About Racing) following him closely, rookie Brett Niall tucked in behind.
After only a few laps the yellows were out for a spun Brett South (Beaumont Motorsports), but Mackenzie was able to lead away with Pickering in hot pursuit.
Unfortunately for Pickering it all came undone as she attempted to go for the lead, Niall sneaking through for second as she straightened up coming out of turn two while Jay Bassanelli was also able to sneak by for third.
Back up front Mackenzie maintained his lead, with Niall impressing as he kept pace, while Bassanelli went wide coming out of turn four, kicking up a heap of dirt and allowing Chris Barrow (Barrow Motorsports) to duck underneath to take third with only a handful of laps remaining.
A couple of laps later the yellows were out again, this time for Pickering who came to a stop in turn two. The restart however was a mess, with cars going everywhere, Niall and Barrow stranded in turn two.
After short delay the field lined up once again, Mackenzie leading away Niall, Bassanelli, Ewan Dickson and Lionel Kirkby and from here the order remained unchanged in what was an entertaining race.
The next round of the Winter Series will be held at the Ellenbrook Speedway on the 6th of July.
