Late Model Racing Western Australia
Warren makes it two in a row!
Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) tonight showed once again why he is the benchmark in WA Late Model racing, qualifying himself on pole position for the thirty-lap feature and leading every lap of the race to take the win, his second in as many starts.
With Warren Oldfield and David Nylander (Nylander Motorsport) sharing the front row for the main event, Oldfield was able to get the jump and race away while Nylander was quickly forced to fend off the advances of Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:). Chalmers got by going through turns three and four, but it was all for naught as the race came under yellows without a lap being completed.
Unfortunately a couple of cars came together, with Veronica McCann (Veronica McCann - Red Hot Racing) coming out worst, backing hard into the turn three wall and her race over.
A complete restart was called, with Oldfield again making the best of it, while Chalmers was quickly on the inside of Nylander and took over second, with Beau Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) and Ken Macpherson (KMM - Ken Macpherson Motorsport) rounding out the top five.
Nylander fought back and was able to momentarily get by Chalmers, but Chalmers fought back out of four and was in second by 0.009 seconds at the completion of lap two.
Warren began to build up his lead, Chalmers desperately chasing while Nylander was desperately fighting off Oldfield and Macpherson, but with four complete the yellows were on for a car park in turn two, only Ryan Huxtable (Huxy Racing) unable to restart.
Whilst Oldfield held strong at the front, Macpherson had the best restart, running around the outside and moving alongside Chalmers in an effort to take second. Chalmers pulled ahead but Beau Oldfield also arrived on the scene and got past Chalmers momentarily, but again Chalmers was able to move ahead.
Warren Oldfield now led Chalmers, Macpherson, Beau Oldfield and Nylander, and for the next few laps this would remain the status quo, despite a lapped car giving Chalmers a sniff on Warren. Lapped traffic would also impact the battle for third, Macpherson ending up slowing as Nylander moved back into third ahead of Beau.
With twelve complete it all fell apart for Chalmers when he spun as he approached lapped traffic in turn three, seeing the yellows on and him resuming from the back, elevating Nylander and Beau Oldfield into second and third respectively.
Warren got away, Nylander chased hard but couldn’t quite keep up wile Beau stuck to the bottom and looked for a way through but wasn’t quite able to make it. Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing) was now in fourth while Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing - TVR) got by Brad Blake for fifth in what was shaping up to be a big battle in the last half of the race.
Beau got by Nylander on lap fifteen, and a lap later Chalmers had worked his way back into sixth before the yellows came out again, with Greg Horan spinning to a stop.
The field was a mess upon restarting, but again Warren held strong over Beau, while Nylander, Chalmers, Vosbergen and Halliday fought it out for the final podium spot.
Nylander found a heap of speed, getting the best of the battle and even getting around the outside of Beau before collecting the wall and coming to a stop, bringing out the yellows with eleven laps remaining.
Chalmers got by Beau Oldfield for second on the restart, with Vosbergen able to do the same a lap later, followed by Halliday on the next circulation.
Despite another stoppage for a stranded Chris Barrow (Barrow Motorsports) with eight laps to go, Warren held strong, though Halliday took advantage to get by Vosbergen for third. Vosbergen fought back with five laps to go to retake the position and from here the order remained unchanged, Warren claiming his second win in a row, defeating Chalmers and Vosbergen in a marathon race.
Teams now have a break to regroup ahead of another huge event, the John Day Speedcar Classic, doubling as Round Four of the Pro Dirt Series, presented by Ross’s Auctioneers and Supafit Seat Covers.
