Blight Returns in Style
Despite limited recent seat time in a Late Model, Kye Blight made a triumphant return on Boxing Night at the Perth Motorplex, delivering a commanding performance to claim victory in Round Five of the Pro Dirt Series, proudly presented by Westlec.
Blight would win both of his heats to claim pole position for the thirty-lap main event, joined by Warren Oldfield on the front row courtesy of a second and a third in his heats. Jay Cardy and Michael Holmes would claim the other preliminary race wins.
As the main event went green Oldfield would sweep around the outside to take the early lead as Blight was squeezed by Jamie Oldfield and Ryan Halliday. Blight wasted little time regaining ground, accelerating strongly and diving underneath Warren Oldfield to take the lead by the completion of the opening lap, with Warren settling into second ahead of Jamie Oldfield and Halliday.
Over the next few laps, Warren and Jamie Oldfield exchanged positions, with Jamie eventually breaking clear by lap five. Out front, Blight began to assert his authority, extending his lead to nearly five seconds over Jamie by the one-third race distance.
Further back, Michael Holmes began a strong charge through the field, first dispatching Halliday and then Warren Oldfield. Holmes closed rapidly on Jamie Oldfield around lap fourteen and at one point briefly showed his nose in front before Jamie was able to respond and pull clear.
As the front three began to space out, attention turned to a fierce battle for fourth involving Warren Oldfield, Luke Halliday, Beau Oldfield and Joe Chalmers. Unfortunately, just as the contest intensified, the yellow lights were illuminated when Abbey Pickering spun in turn three with seventeen laps completed, bunching the field once again.
Blight was clean on the restart, while Holmes seized the opportunity to move past Jamie Oldfield into second. Beau Oldfield also advanced into fourth and immediately applied pressure to Jamie. Further back, multiple cars made contact, with David Nylander briefly ending up mounted on the side of Joe Chalmers’ car. Remarkably, all competitors continued, although Chalmers soon developed a deflating tyre and would ultimately retire infield.
Blight and Holmes pulled clear at the front as Beau Oldfield moved past Jamie for third. With six laps remaining, Jamie regrouped and reclaimed third before another caution was required when Nathan Richards spun in turn two, setting up a five-lap dash to the finish.
On the restart, Jamie Oldfield was able to work his way back past Holmes and set his sights on Blight. Behind them, Luke Halliday and Jay Cardy moved past Warren Oldfield into fifth and sixth respectively.
Holmes refused to concede, repeatedly challenging Jamie and launching a last-corner lunge on the final lap, but Jamie held firm to secure second place, with Holmes completing his second consecutive podium finish while Blight claimed an exciting win.
Teams now have just a few days turn around as they return to the Perth Motorplex on the 29th of December as part of the High Limit International program, with Round Six of the Pro Dirt Series proudly presented by McPhee Freight.
