OLDFIELD WINS HIS MAIDEN!
Kalgoorlie International Speedway has long had a history of creating first time Pro Dirt Series feature winners and last night that list was extended, with young Beau Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) claiming his maiden feature race win victory in Round 12, presented by Ross's Auctioneers & Valuers.
After strong heat race performances, Oldfield earned a start from position three for the 30-lap main event. Rod Musarra (Team Rocket) and Mat Robbins (Robbins Motorsport ) shared the front row, leading a sixteen-car field to the green on the red dirt Kalgoorlie surface.
Oldfield wasted no time asserting himself, surging into the early lead as Musarra rolled the outside and began applying pressure. The pair traded the top spot in a fierce opening exchange, Musarra edging ahead before Oldfield responded with a bold move around the outside to reclaim control.
Lapped traffic soon came into play, and it proved pivotal. Twice Oldfield negotiated slower cars with precision, while Musarra was momentarily delayed, allowing the #11 to build a handy advantage.
By the halfway mark, Oldfield had established a comfortable margin at the front.
A spin by Jeff Dickerson bunched the field back together and erased Oldfield’s buffer. Musarra sat second on the restart, Robbins third, with Abbey Pickering (All About Racing) and Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) who had charged forward from the rear of the field after earlier dropping a heat race, rounding out the top five.
With eleven laps remaining, Beau Oldfield again stretched clear, while Robbins began to pressure Musarra for second. Warren Oldfield continued his march, moving past Pickering before setting his sights on the podium positions. Pickering however refused to yield, fighting back and looking under Warren for a way back through.
Warren got away and then got around Robbins for third, a few laps later then able to start putting the pressure on Musarra.
In the closing laps, Beau’s advantage hovered at just over three seconds as the battle behind intensified. Warren eventually found a way past Musarra when the latter ran wide, momentarily elevating himself into second.
Musarra immediately countered, and Pickering, who had raced past Robbins for fourth, also joined the fight, the trio running three-wide in a thrilling final-lap dash.
Out front, however, there was no denying Beau Oldfield. The youngster held firm to secure his first ever Pro Dirt Series feature win, capping off a composed drive and defeating Musarra who had just got the nose in front of Warren in the run to the line.
After an epic weekend of racing teams now have a break in the Pro Dirt Series until the end of March, but this certainly doesn’t mean a break in the action, as the five nights of fury, featuring the two night WA Title, the MHR Hump Day Hustle and the two night Late Model Nationals 100 lapper, kicks off in a fortnight.
