Clanton Wins Hump Day Hustle!

American Shane Clanton tonight got a measure of revenge for last weekend’s WA Title when he raced his way to a great win in the Michael Holmes Racing Hump Day Hustle event at the Perth Motorplex.

Clanton would start outside pole sitter Ben Nicastri (Ben Nicastri Racing) for the thirty-lap feature race, but as the greens came on Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) was quick to join the front row, going three wide for the lead down the front straight.

Chalmers was able to race to the front, Clanton following closely behind while Michael Holmes (Michael Holmes Racing) moved into third ahead of Nicastri and another American in Jody Knowles (Cardy Racing Components).

Clanton fought back on Chalmers, getting by him on the second circulation, and quickly setting about building up a lead.

Clanton found himself in the first of the lapped traffic by the fifth lap, but it did very little to slow him down, while further back Nicastri got by Holmes to retake third place.

Shortly after Knowles also got by Holmes for fourth.

Chalmers continued to peg away at the gap to Clanton and with ten complete was right behind him, the lead duo battling through a pack of three lapped cars.

All of a sudden Clanton broke free and again began to pull away as Chalmers frantically tried to clear the rest of the cars and get back into open air.

Further back Knowles had moved into third and Holmes got back by Nicastri for fourth by the halfway point.

Lapped traffic again came into play, allowing Chalmers to slide by and take the lead on lap eighteen, and with five cars around them, the lead duo continued to fight.

Clanton threaded the needle on lap nineteen and got clear again, leaving two cars between himself and Chalmers. This gave him the gap he needed, the extra little bit of time it took Chalmers to get through seeing him now over one and a half seconds behind.

By this point Holmes had also grabbed third once again, with Knowles now under pressure from Alex Sweeney, Rod Musarra (Team Rocket) and Abbey Pickering (All About Racing) who had all passed Nicastri and were looking for a top five position.

With five to go Clanton had found himself in traffic yet again and Chalmers closed the gap to under half a second, while Musarra and Pickering both drove around Sweeney for positions.

With three to go it was Clanton ahead of Chalmers, Knowles, Holmes and Musarra, and with one to go Clanton clouted the turn two wall and sent sparks showering, but it mattered little as he took the win from Chalmers in what was an epic race.

Jody Knowles got back by Holmes for third in the final stages with Rod Musarra rounding out the top five finishers in a race that went non-stop, with all twenty three starters taking the chequers.

Teams now have a very short turnaround time, with racing this Friday and Saturday night at the Perth Motorplex for the final two nights of the Late Model Speedweek, culminating in the 100 lap Late Model Nationals feature on Saturday night.
