Knowles and Oldfield Lock in the 100 Lapper Front Row!
American Jody Knowles and local hero Jamie Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) have locked in front row starting positions for tomorrow nights 100 lapper Late Model Nationals event at the Perth Motorplex after winning their respective preliminary feature races tonight.
The top ten of each feature race have earned their positions for the longest ever main event held at the Motorplex, with the first preliminary result setting the inside line and the second the outside.
Knowles would start from pole position in the first preliminary, alongside Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) who was guest driving the Nylander Motorsport #54 machine, and was quickly into the lead.
Fellow American Shane Clanton also got by Chalmers at the start, with Knowles quickly pulling away from Clanton and the rest of the field while Chalmers tried to hold off Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) and Luke Halliday (Halliday Racing).
By the halfway point the whole field had spread out, with Knowles able to begin picking his way through traffic. Chalmers began to close the gap on Clanton as the laps wound down, but up front it was all Knowles, leading every lap and going through the opening night undefeated.
The second feature saw Brad Blake starting from pole position while Todd Bayley (Todd Bayley Racing) had a dramatic improvement on his results over the last week to join him on the front row.
Blake shot away very quickly from the field as Bayley got sideways and swallowed by the pack, Jamie Oldfield emerging in second ahead of Michael Holmes (Michael Holmes Racing) at the completion of the first lap.
Oldfield put the #51 machine on the highline, driving right around Blake to take over the lead while Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components) moved his way into third before being passed back shortly after.
Bayley fought back and passed a heap of cars to slot back into fourth by the halfway point, but up front Oldfield had opened up a huge gap on Blake with Holmes still holding down second.
Rod Musarra (Team Rocket) began to make a late race charge, getting past Veronica McCann (Veronica McCann - Red Hot Racing) for fifth, then chasing down Bayley for fourth. With one to go Musarra was right on the tail of Blake and Holmes as they fought for second, lapped traffic coming into play and Musarra getting by for third, Oldfield officially taking the win from Blake and Musarra.
Teams now will spend the evening getting themselves ready for a huge 100 lap race tomorrow night, with the top twenty locked in, while the final four will be decided courtesy of the last chance qualifier tomorrow night.
