Winter Series Finale!
Setting the tone for the upcoming Pro Dirt Series opening round in just under a fortnight’s time, Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) took the chance to test a new car, racing from the rear of the field to outclass the remainder of the field at Ellenbrook Speedway last night.
The Winter Series regulars would contest two heats and then start at the front of the feature event while the Pro Dirt Series regulars did two sessions of hot laps before starting half a lap behind in the twenty lap main event.
Courtesy of two heat race wins, Beau Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) would start the feature from pole position and as soon as the green flag dropped, he was a bullet from a gun, pulling away from the rest of the field.
Though he was joined by teammate Ewan Dickson on the front row it was Rob Wells (CTM Recruitment Racing) who would slot into second while Dickson went to third, desperately looking for a way through. Dickson made it through momentarily but Wells dove straight back by to retake second while further back Warren Oldfield and Ken Macpherson (KMM - Ken Macpherson Motorsport) were slicing their way through the field.
A few cars would baulk shortly after, Bruce Mackenzie left with nowhere to go, spinning and rolling backwards and ending up parked backwards on an infield bollard which took a moment to lift him off, but he was lucky enough to be able to continue.
Oldfield led away the restart and it only took a couple of laps for Warren to wrestle second from Wells, with Macpherson following him though a lap later.
Beau had managed to build up a solid lead but it was negated with thirteen to go as Series points leader Jay Bassanelli (Bassanelli Motorsport ) spun to a stop in turn four.
Again Beau broke away on the restart while Macpherson was able to sneak by Warren for second. Shortly after Warren began to slow and looked to head infield but at the very same time Beau managed to spin out in turn four to bring out the yellow lights, sending him to the rear and giving Warren the chance to rejoin the field just behind Macpherson, while Brett Niall was now in third.
Unfortunately Macpherson then suffered a flay tyre and was forced infield, handing Warren the lead ahead of Niall and Wells, with Dickson fighting back on the restart to move back into the top three once again.
Beau Oldfield worked his way back through the field while up front Warren was well clear of Niall and Dickson, though he would be bought back to the field once again as Mackenzie spun in turn three with five laps remaining.
The next couple of laps would see business as usual, the only change being Beau racing into fourth after passing Wells, and though he looked for third underneath Dickson ran out of time as the race came under cautions for the final time with two laps to go and was declared after Shannon Knowles made heavy contact with the turn two wall, leaving Warren Oldfield the official winner from Brett Niall and Ewan Dickson.
Full series points will be released tomorrow, but we can assure you: it is close!
